About Fleas
Fleas are small insects, 2-3mm long and red-brown colour. They are wingless but have powerful back legs designed for jumping.
Fleas are a common problem in homes especially for those with cats or dogs. They are also frequently found when moving into a home that has previously had pets.
Fleas can remain dormant (in their cocoon) for up to a year or more and only emerge when they feel the vibration of footsteps. It is very common for a flea infestation to remain dormant in an empty home and only become active when people move in.
The adult flea feeds on the blood of mammals and birds. The main concern caused by fleas is the distress that flea bites cause to people and pets.
Flea larvae feed on organic matter in carpets & bedding and on the blood rich faeces of the adult flea, therefore high levels of hygiene can slow the life-cycle.
Pets bedding in particular needs to be washed regularly at a high temperatures and all carpets and furnishings should be regularly vacuumed in order to prevent fleas becoming established.
Treatment:
A residual insecticide sprayed to all floor areas throughout the premises, ensuring all floor spaces are clear where possible to enable a thorough treatment.
It is advised that the infested area is in constant use in order to entice the flea to emerge from its pupae stage/cocoon. Once emerged the young flea will ingest the residual insecticide and will die off within a few days.
