Wasp Rest Removal Chelmsford

Wasp nest Removal Chelmsford

With the warm weather forecast to continue over the next few weeks it’s likely that wasps will be starting to become really active. Keep an eye out for wasps around your property and if you see a steady stream of wasps going in and out of an entry point on your house, garden shed or outbuilding it could be you have a wasp nest. At this early part of the season the wasps nest are still relatively small and as such are a lot easier to deal with. Like lots of pest problems the earlier the problem can be identified and treated the less harm is likely to be caused. The picture shows a early season wasp nest built in a garden shed.

Bees Swarming in Chelmsford

bees in garden chelmsford

We are just coming into the time of year when honey bees start to swarm and we have already had a couple of calls from concerned customers asking what to do. Honey bees swarm when they are looking for a place to establish a new colony.

The worker bees swarm around the queen to protect her and keep her warm a single swarm can contain hundreds and maybe thousands of bees. The good news is that if you have a honey bee swarm like the one in the picture, they usually move on within a few days.

If the swarm remains for more than 48 hours they may have chosen to set up a permanent colony. If this is the case, give St George’s Pest Control a call and we can talk you through what the next options are.

Wasp Control Chelmsford

With the weather being so warm over the Easter weekend we have started to get a few calls about wasps. This early in the year any wasps you see are likely to be queens coming out of hibernation. They will be looking for food, which is quite scarce at the moment, and also looking for sites to build a nest.

If the warm weather continues the queens will start with their nest building, and they will start out about the size of a walnut (as in the picture).

Birds nesting under roof in Chelmsford

bird proofing chelmsford

Have you had problems with birds nesting under your roofing tiles? All roofs are fitted with bird guard to stop birds getting under the tiles but over time this degrades and will eventually need repair or replacement. By law wild birds cannot be disturbed during the nesting season, so if you do have problems, now is the time of year to do something about it. The two pictures show a recent job where we fitted a replacement bird guard to a customers house that had issues with starlings nesting under the roof tiles.

Cluster Flies Chelmsford

Now we are moving into the Autumn months cluster flies can become a problem. These are grey / brown slow moving flies about the same size as a housefly. Unlike houseflies they are not attracted by food leftovers. Instead the larvae are a parasite of earthworms and In autumn the adults congregate in large numbers in upper rooms or roof spaces of houses to hibernate, reemerging in Spring to find egg laying sites outside. They are frequently found in the gaps around window frames and can sometimes be found in very larges numbers.

Wasp Idenification Chelmsford

In early autumn we sometimes get calls from customers worried a wasp nest has just appeared in their lawn. Although wasps are still active at this time year, they begin building their nests in late spring and early summer and it’s likely any nest in a well used area would have become a nuisance before September. It’s much more likely to be the Ivy Mining bee, a harmless solitary bee that lays it’s eggs in burrows it makes in loose or sandy soil. The bees are totally harmless and appear in late August and early September and live for around six weeks. You can see in the pictures they do resemble Honey bees so can be mistaken for wasps.

If you are worried a wasp nest might have appeared in your garden, give St George’s Pest Control a call for expert advice.

Bedbug Treatments Chelmsford

bedbug treatments in Chelmsford

During the holiday season it’s great to get away but you can sometimes bring back an unwanted souvenir or two in the form of bed bugs. Anywhere that has a high turn over of people sleeping there is vulnerable to getting bed bugs and this includes hotels and holiday lets. Apart from seeing the bed bugs themselves other things to look are for are small dark marks around the bed-frame and mattress as shown in the picture.

The adult bed bugs themselves are around the size and colour of an apple pip and feed almost exclusively on human blood. Bed bug eggs are very small and white, and once hatched the bed bugs grow and shed their skin after they consume a meal of human blood.

The shed skins are another tell tale sign to look for. They feed roughly every 6 days and reach adult size after they have shed their skins six times. Bed bugs are one of the trickiest pests to get rid of and are best left to a professional pest control company to deal with. If you think you might have bed bugs, contact St Georges Pest Control.

Our climate isn’t warm enough for cockroaches to live outside but they are happy to make their home inside buildings. When cockroaches infest a property they prefer warm conditions and are often found in kitchens, bathrooms and around boilers.

This picture shows German cockroaches congregating in the back of a fridge where they thrive in the heat given off by the electrical components.
