About Carpet Beetle

• Mottled brown, grey and cream colour
• Ladybird shaped
• 2 to 4mm long
• Larvae are called ‘Woolly Bears’

Lifecycle:
The carpet beetle lays its eggs on carpets, clothing, furniture and old bird’s nests in lofts, all a suitable food source for the larvae when they emerge.

Carpet beetle larvae are 4mm long and covered in brown hairs, they are known as ‘woolly bears’ and are most active in October.

Signs of carpet beetle are beetles crawling around carpets close to furniture in shadier areas. Damage most often occurs underneath furniture and can go unnoticed causing serious damage.

It is the larvae (woolly bears) that feed on natural fibres and cause damage to carpets, clothing and upholstery, not the adult carpet beetle.
The adult carpet beetle feeds on pollen and nectar and can fly long distances to find suitable food; they will often appear through an open window. The adult carpet beetle is seen from April to June seeking a site to lay its eggs.

Treatment:
An insecticide spray treatment applied to all infected areas, under carpets, between floorboards and crevices where fluff may collect.

It is advisable to thoroughly vacuum under furniture on a regular basis and clean fluff and debris from cupboards, shelves and upholstery.
