About Cockroaches

German Cockroach
• Brown-dark brown
• 10-15mm long
• Two brown stripes on thorax
• Long wings overlapping body (male and female)
• Capable of running up walls and across ceilings
• From nymph to maturity in 6 to 12 weeks

Oriental Cockroach
• Dark brown-almost black
• 20-24mm long
• Male has wings that cover two-thirds of its abdomen
• Female’s wings are underdeveloped (nodules)
• From nymph to maturity in 6 to 12 months

Lifecycle:
The German cockroach carries its egg case, a small brown purse-like capsule, until the 30 or more nymphs are ready to hatch from it.

The Oriental cockroach deposits its 13mm long egg capsule on packaging, sacking or in suitable dark crevices before the 16 or 18 nymphs hatch out.
Both species eat any sort of food and are most active after dark. Emerging from their inaccessible harbourages to forage they contaminate food, utensils, and preparation surfaces. They can be carriers of various diseases, including serious food poisoning, gastro-enteritis and tuberculosis.

The Oriental cockroach likes warm temperatures and damp conditions. They are less likely to climb than the German cockroach but will travel upwards in flats and multi-story buildings.

Despite having wings and being able to fly German cockroaches rarely do, instead they are highly mobile and can run & crawl at a rapid pace. They spend most of the day hidden in cracks and crevices together and come out when dark to forage for food.

Treatment:
A residual insecticide applied to all floor areas, wall junctions, cracks and crevices will treat the majority. A second treatment will kill the newly hatched nymphs and any adults that have crawled out of their harbourage and come into contact with the residual insecticide.
